It’s a dilemma many workers face in the 21st century: How to deal with the 9-to-5 grind while parenting.
One La Mesa couple chose to tackle the problem head on, and with a little bit of inspiration from a trip to Maui.
Joseph and Kelsey Olanoff are the founders of SnoCal Shaved Ice, a food truck that delivers a version of the tasty Hawaiian dessert to San Diegans. The company, which was founded five years ago, was produced when Joseph wanted to find a more fulfilling career.
“I was between jobs and was trying to find a career that would work for our future, growing family, and that would allow me some independence,” Joseph said. “After a little brainstorming, we remembered how much we loved the shaved ice in Hawaii when we were married in 2010.”
Joseph said the duo did research and found a demand for more shaved ice companies in the region.
“I worked in restaurants most of my life and my wife does digital marketing so we hoped it was enough of a balance to make it work,” he said.
Today, the food truck can be found at events and private parties throughout the region. The company has even given back to the community, donating more than $12,000 to local charities since its formation.
But, the food truck doesn’t just offer the typical shaved ice desserts you’d find anywhere. Joseph said the couple found their own twist to the traditional confection.
“All shaved ice places have the tropical flavors and combinations but since many mainland people have never been to Hawaii we made a few custom creations such as our root beer float, caramel apple, birthday cake, grape volcano and mango volcano that many people love,” he said. “Shave ice is a happy product and we do our best to embody that and treat every customer like they are special and have them start and finish with a smile.”
Since starting their business, the couple have welcomed two children and have plans to launch another dessert business: SnoCal Ice Cream Sandwiches. They also hope to open a brick-and-mortar location in the future.
