MarketInk: BCA Radio Organizes Big Boys Toy Show

Broadcast Company of the Americas, operator of three radio stations in San Diego, is organizing “The Big Boys Toy Show,” an all-day interactive event featuring a variety of cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, electronics, home furnishings, teams and sports celebrities, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier, 1000 North Harbor Boulevard downtown. Presenting sponsor is Sycuan Golf Resort.

“This event will be Southern California’s ultimate guys playground for boys of all ages and their families,” said Mike Glickenhaus, BCA president and market manager. “Here’s your chance to experience up close every amazing and awesome toy, gizmo, gadget and gear you’ve ever dreamed about, plus hang out with famous sports celebrities and San Diego’s top radio sports talk-show personalities. This will be a unique, all-day event where you’ll find everything a man wants and needs under one roof.”

More than 50,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor exhibit space will feature military tanks and hummers, a giant reptile cave, an inflatable ninja obstacle course and a giant jousting rink. Exhibits will include drones, robots and hobby aircraft and telescopes, along with sports shooting, camping accessories and skydiving, as well as a man cave with furniture, home theater, wall decor and gaming. Additional exhibits will include a Segway, hooverboards, scooters, bikes motorcycles, cars, boats and a luxury RV.

Sports celebrities scheduled to appear include: Chargers offensive lineman Orlando Franklin; former Chargers players Pete Shaw, Burt Grossman, John Carney, Darren Bennett, Willie Buchanon, Vencie Glenn; Padres ownership partner Peter Seidler; former Padres players Tony Gwynn Jr., Kurt Bevacqua, Randy Jones; Aztecs coaches Rocky Long and Steve Fisher. On-air talent from BCA stations XPRS 1090-AM The Mighty 1090, XPRS-FM 105.7 MAX-FM and XEPE ESPN 1700-AM also will be on hand.

Nourishment will be provided by nine food trucks offering pizza, seafood, tacos, shaved ice, ice cream and bacon, along with a craft beer garden. Proceeds will benefit Computers 2 San Diego Kids, a local nonprofit that recycles and refurbishes used computers for families in need. Admission to The Big Boys Toy Show is $10 for adults, free for children ages 14 and under with a paying adult. SDX Invites Brand Diego Awards Nominations

SDX is now accepting nominations for its 2016 Brand Diego awards. Now in its fourth year, the awards program recognizes outstanding San Diego brands and the marketing and advertising professionals who build those brands, according to Brian Hilemon, SDX 2016-17 president.

“The Brand Diego Awards allow us to take a moment to honor the brands, agencies and media companies and individuals who are doing incredible work,” said Hilemon. “As a San Diegan, I’m extremely proud of this talented, creative and inspiring community of professionals.”

This year’s categories include: Business-to-Consumer Brand of the Year, Business-to-Business Brand of the Year, Non-Profit Brand of the Year, Emerging Brand of the Year, Brand Professional of the Year, Agency of the Year, Agency Professional of the Year, Media Company of the Year, Media Professional of the Year, Media Talent of the Year, Industry Affiliate of the Year, Hispanic Marketing Brand of the Year, Hispanic Marketing Professional of the Year, Young Achiever Award, Marketing Employer of the Year and Community Partner Award.

Deadline for nominations is Friday, Sept. 30. Nominations can be submitted at There is no entry fee. Winners will be announced at a 5:30 p.m. reception Thursday, Nov. 10 at the McMillin Event Center at Liberty Station.

The Brand Diego awards program also will include the Paula E. Sullivan Award, a career achievement award. Since 1992, Sullivan award recipients have included individuals actively involved and dedicated to the San Diego advertising and graphic design community who are willing to share their accomplishments, expertise and inspiration with the San Diego community.

Founded in 1911, SDX, formerly San Diego Ad Club, is San Diego’s oldest continuously operating business association. Members include advertising and marketing professionals, creative thinkers, business planners and communications technology innovators.

L7 Creative’s Tom Gallego Joins Forbes Council

Tom Gallego, president, L7 Creative, a Carlsbad-based digital brand engagement agency, has joined the Forbes Agency Council, an invitation-only organization for executives in successful public relations, media strategy, creative and advertising agencies. Gallego said he will share business insights and expert opinion on the principles of digital branding on and other Forbes-related news outlets.

Oster Adds Farmer’s Best to Client Roster

Branding agency Oster and Associates has announced it is the agency of record for Farmer’s Best, a Nogales, AZ-based, multi-commodity produce operation with vegetable fields in Sinaloa and Sonora, Mexico.

Oster said it will provide Farmer’s Best with trade show support, interactive and social media services, creative, copywriting, PR and media buying, said Bev Oster, president.

“We have a rich history of working with produce companies throughout our 30 years in business,” Oster said. “Having worked with Farmer’s Best back in 2011, we are looking forward to become reacquainted with the company and its mission.”
