Hotel industry veteran Brian Hughes has been selected as the new executive director of the San Diego Tourism Marketing District, which promotes the city as a vacation destination.

Hughes has been general manager of the Omni San Diego Hotel, chairman of the San Diego Tourism Authority and a member of the San Diego Hotel-Motel Association.
“With his extensive hotel industry experience and his significant investment in supporting San Diego’s tourism community, Mr. Hughes is distinctly qualified to serve as executive director of the organization,” Bill Evans, chairman of the TMD’s Board of Directors, said in a statement released today. “We look forward to his insightful leadership.”
Hughes replaces longtime executive director Lorin Stewart, who left to become the interim CEO of Lead San Diego.
The TMD is funded with a 2 percent surcharge on hotel room rates. The agency funnels the money to organizations that hold events or conduct promotions that bring tourists to San Diego.
