
Ten companies and organizations were named “Recyclers of the Year” Thursday by the city of San Diego during an event at the Central Library.
The winners of the 24th annual Waste Reduction and Recycling Awards were honored for the efforts and accomplishments in protecting the environment and conserving natural resources, according to the city’s Environmental Services Department.
“I’m extremely proud of San Diego’s business community with their ongoing efforts to reduce waste and protect our environment,” said city Environmental Services Director Mario Sierra. “This year’s group of award winners truly exemplifies the high priority these businesses place on diverting waste from the Miramar Landfill.”
The 10 awardees were:
— Cox Communications;
— Intuit;
— Kyocera Communications;
— Qualcomm;
— Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego;
— San Diego Convention Center Corp.;
— San Diego County Regional Airport Authority;
— San Diego Zoo Global;
— SeaWorld San Diego; and
— the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.
Runners-up included Continental Maritime, Cubic Corp., Hewlett Packard and numerous hotels — the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown, Hilton San Diego Bayfront, Hotel Indigo San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, Mission Valley Resort, Paradise Point Resort, San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina, Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina and The Lodge at Torrey Pines.
Other runners-up were 1to1 Movement, a nonprofit focused on raising awareness of sustainability; BoxedGreen, which sells used boxes; defense contractor Leidos; Quality Assurance International, which certifies organic products; Snooze an A.M. Eatery, a restaurant in Hillcrest; and Ssubi is Hope, a nonprofit that assists Ugandan refugees.
