Slightly Stoopid and Sublime headline Field of Dreamz Fest

San Diego’s music scene is currently going through a bit of a renaissance with numerous artists making an impact on both national and international stages. One of the acts leading the charge is OB-based, platinum-selling band, Slightly Stoopid, who headline the inaugural Field of Dreamz Fest on June 13. Founded in 1994, the band has built a huge following through relentless touring and a batch of hook-filled tunes built on a foundation of rock, reggae, hip-hop, and punk. The band hasn’t released a new album since 2018, but the new single, “Shine For You,” shows that their mix of pop hooks and island sounds is just as infectious as ever. The festival’s two stages will also host sets from Sublime, Stephen Marley, The Elovaters, Pepper, DENM, Z-Trip, Band of Gringos, and Boostive.

A long way from Iceland

Icelandic troubadour Ásgeir plays Music Box on June 13. Blessed with a high, sweet voice and a strong melodic sense, Ásgeir’s plaintive songs have made him a star in his homeland and it’s easy to see why. Whether he sings Icelandic or English words, Ásgeir’s voice is pure emotion. It doesn’t matter if you understand the words, as heard on his latest album’s title track, “Julia,” Ásgeir’s voice conveys the feelings in those lyrics perfectly.

  • Ásgeir: Saturday, June 13, at Music Box, 1337 India St. 8 p.m. $30.

Blues, Jazz, R&B wrapped in one

‘Keyboardist Taryn Donath brings her trio to Lou Lou’s on June 14. Backed by drummer Matthew Taylor and award-winning guitarist Laura Chavez, Donath’s gigs are a showcase for her amazing playing on tunes by the likes of Ramsey Lewis and Herbie Hancock alongside like-minded originals. Best of all, whereas when these gifted musicians play in larger combos, their contributions can be lost in the mix, the trio format really allows each player to shine. This is a great live band. Blending blues, jazz and R&B, Donath is a wonderful improviser, perfectly matched with Chavez’s inspired playing.

  • Taryn Donath Trio: Sunday, June 14, at Lou Lou’s, 2223 El Cajon Blvd. 7 p.m. No cover.

Anvil to smash Brick by Brick

Long-running Canadian heavy metal band Anvil takes the stage at Brick by Brick on June 17. Though never scoring a breakthrough hit, the band has built up a diehard fanbase through the decades. Founded in 1978, the band is still going strong, currently touring in support of their 20th album, “One and Only.” Not much has changed musically since album #1. Indeed, the band’s latest single, “Feed Your Fantasy,” sounds like a lost classic, circa the early 1980’s. Hard rock listeners won’t want to miss this show from one of metal’s pioneering acts.

  • Anvil: Wednesday, June 17 at Brick by Brick, 1130 Buenos Ave. 7:30 p.m. 21 and up. $27.
