Think the Oscars and the Emmys don’t recognize your Comic-Con favorites? Try the new Critics Choice Super Awards.
The Hulu fantasy-romance movie “Palm Springs” has a leading five film nominations heading into Sunday’s presentation of the inaugural awards show. HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” has six nods to lead the television side.
Eligible genres include superhero, science-fiction/fantasy, horror, action and animation.
The inaugural ceremony, produced remotely due to COVID-19 protocols, will air on The CW Network, hosted by actor/director/writer Kevin Smith – a devoted San Diego Comic-Con supporter – and actress/writer Dani Fernandez.

The show will air in San Diego at 8 p.m. Sunday on Channel 6.
“Palm Springs” is nominated for best science-fiction/fantasy film, along with acting nods for Andy Samberg, J.K. Simmons and Cristin Milioti.
Also nominated for best science-fiction/fantasy film are “Love and Monsters,” “Possessor,” “Synchronic” and “The Vast of Night.”
Competing for best action movie honors will be “Bad Boys for Life,” “Da 5 Bloods,” “Extraction,” “Greyhound,” “The Hunt,” “Mulan,” “The Outpost” and “Tenet.”
“Lovecraft Country” leads the list of nominees for best horror series, a category that also consists of “Evil,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “The Outsider,” “Supernatural” and “The Walking Dead.”
Other nominees include Comic-Con attendees like Charlize Theron and Marvel stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, Anthony Mackie and Chris Pratt.
During the ceremony, the Critics Choice Association will present a Legacy Award to the “Star Trek” franchise, recognizing “the cultural impact it has had across multiple decades while continuing to appeal to and grow its loyal fanbase with new stories and characters.”
Patrick Stewart (“Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Star Trek: Picard”) and Sonequa Martin-Green (“Star Trek: Discovery”) will accept the honor.
The award show is the brainchild of Critics Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin, with the organization saying the event is “a logical part of a broader expansion of the Critics Choice Awards to accommodate the many types of entertainment that the more than 400 members of the Critics Choice Association cover all year long.”
The nominees were chosen by committees of association members who specialize in the various genres, and winners decided by members who had viewed the nominated series and films, according to the association.
Despite the remote nature of the broadcast, the association stated that “every single winner will be seen accepting in person on the show. Zero no-shows but a lot of wildly appreciative stars.”
