“We look forward to having Mingei as a tenant and creative partner,” said Alan Ziter, executive director of the NTC Foundation, which oversees 26 buildings in Liberty Station’s growing arts district. “Not only will they help enliven the Dick Laub NTC Command Center, but they will provide additional creative programming and activities.”
In addition to hosting their own temporary exhibitions and events, the Mingei team will participate in the district’s current programs, including including Friday Night Liberty. Café Mingei will be the onsite cafe for Rady Children’s Ice Rink benefiting Rady Children’s Hospital.
“We couldn’t think of a better place to be while our building is being upgraded,” explained Rob Sidner, the Mingei’s executive director. “We look forward to introducing Mingei to new audiences and being part of this growing arts district.”
The folk art museum will close in September for the renovation, which will restore the 1915 House of Charm, re-opening its upper terraces and iconic tower. The museum’s staff of 14 will move into office space in Building 202 at 2820 Roosevelt Road during the renovation.
