San Diego State University theatre and music students are planning an epic production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” in December with a psychedelic rock band and a 120-voice choir.
“This production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Concert could only happen at SDSU,” said Robert Meffe, head of the university’s graduate musical theatre program. “We are marshaling the forces of 18 musical theater students, 120 choral singers, 65 symphonic musicians and a psychedelic rock band to perform on stage with spectacular rock concert lighting and projections for a theatrical experience like you have never seen before.”
The 1970 rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice is loosely based on the Gospels’ accounts of the last week of Jesus’s life.
Conducted by Meffe and directed by Stephen Brotebeck, the opera will run for four performances only, Dec. 1-3 at 7:30 p.m., and Dec. 4 at 2 p.m., in the Don Powell Theatre on campus.
Tickets are $20 for general admission and are available online at ttf.sdsu.edu.
