Julie Seely was in sixth grade when she discovered skating at the seasonal rink at Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego.

Seely, a Spring Valley native, said she immediately fell in love with the sport and began taking classes with two local coaches. Years later, at age 19, she is touring the world with Feld Entertainment, playing a young Elsa in the beloved Disney on Ice “Frozen” show.

“It’s so much fun,” Seely said. “I’ve really enjoyed this opportunity. I don’t want to put an end day on it. I definitely plan on staying on until I’ve seen the world.”

Seely began her professional career in ice skating with the help of San Diego coaches Terry and Tony Kudrna, both of whom have worked in the industry.

“They are very persistent people with just a lot of motivation,” Seely said. “They taught me about passion and discipline.”

With their help, Seely place first in the Los Angeles Showcase, second in the U.S. Regionals and passed the Intermediate Freeskate test. The husband and wife team also introduced her to the idea of performing for Disney on Ice.

“I was so excited for the idea,” Seely said. “They encouraged me to go forward and audition.”

But it wasn’t until six months after she auditioned for the show that she discovered she made it. In fact, she has just completed her enrollment at San Diego State University when she received an email telling her the positive news.

“I found out in July 2014 so just after graduating (from Grossmont High School),” Seely said. “I had actually just filled out all my classes at SDSU and gone to orientation that day when I came back home and found out I got into Disney. I was really hoping for it but not sure if it would come to fruition.”

Now, Seely is touring around the U.S. through mid-May with a scheduled performance in her hometown next week. After the U.S. tour, Disney on Ice will go around the world performing in countries such as Japan, New Zealand Australia.

Seely, who hopes to earn a bachelor’s degree in business, credits her success to those around her, including her parents who she calls role models.

“My parents are so supportive,” Seely said. “They are really excited that I was able to make this dream come true.”

Disney on Ice, by Feld Entertainment and sponsored by Stonyfield YoKids Organic Yogurt, will be in San Diego at the Valley View Casino Center from Jan. 20 to Jan. 24. Tickets start at $20. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to www.disneyonice.com.
