Painting of Little Italy sign by John Asaro.

Meyer Fine Art is hosting a fundraising art exhibition opening Thursday to benefit the Little Italy Association’s Piazza Famiglia project — a 10,000 square foot piazza on Date Street.

“Coming Home to Famiglia: The Works of John Asaro” runs from Thursday through August 1 and features some 100 paintings of San Diego scenes.

Fifty percent of sales from the art exhibition will be donated to the Little Italy Association to create the piazza and associated space for restaurants, businesses and underground parking in Little Italy.

Asaro is a native Californian of Sicilian descent who grew up in Little Italy. The artist wanted to find a way to give back to community that accepted his family so warmly.

There is a special public viewing on Sunday, July 19, from 12 to 4 p.m., with an opportunity to meet the artist.
