The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will bring it’s wide-ranging musical repertoire to the La Jolla Music Society on Friday.

The eight members of the unusual ensemble don orchestra dress and strum a variety of ukuleles in different sizes and registers. They offer widely varying programs from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana, switching easily from Otis Redding to Spaghetti Western soundtracks.

According to the orchestra’s website, “A concert by the Ukulele Orchestra is a funny, virtuosic, twanging, awesome, foot-stomping obituary of rock-n-roll and melodious light entertainment featuring only the ‘bonsai guitar’ and a menagerie of voices in a collision of post-punk performance and toe-tapping oldies.”

Their San Diego performance is at Sherwood Auditorium in the Museum of Contemporary Art on Friday, Jan. 23, at 8 pm. Tickets are $25-$65 and are available at 858.459.3728 or online at www.LJMS.org.
