The energy bill for San Diego Gas & Electric’s customers will be a little lighter in October.

SDG&E residential accounts will receive a $78.22 credit in October, thanks to the California Climate Credit program administered by the California Public Utilities Commission.

The credit is part of the state’s effort to combat and mitigate climate change.

Natural gas customers received a $58.98 credit on their statement in April. That same month, those with electric service saw the first credit applied to their billing statement. The three credit installments total more than $200 in bill credits in 2024.

“We appreciate working collaboratively with the California Public Utilities Commission to distribute the Climate Credit and offer some financial relief to our customers,” said Dana Golan, SDG&E vice president of customer services, in a release.

“Anyone struggling to pay their bill is encouraged to reach out to us. We’re here to help connect them with financial assistance programs.”

The California Climate Credit is part of statewide efforts to fight climate change. This credit comes from the state’s cap-and-trade program that requires polluters to pay for climate pollution. Credits are distributed in April and October each year and are designed to help utility customers during the transition to a more sustainable future.

There is no action required to receive the credit. All gas and electricity customers, including community choice aggregation customers and master-metered customers, will automatically receive the credit in their upcoming billing cycles. SDG&E will also alert customers to the Climate Credit via email.

Because billing cycles differ by customer, not everyone will see the bill credit at the same time in October.
