Mexican protesters angry over rising gas prices closed the San Ysidro Port of Entry for nearly four hours on Saturday night.
All southbound traffic to Mexico was diverted to eastbound Route 905 and the surrounding surface streets, snarling traffic throughout the area. The Otay Mesa Port of Entry remained open.
The Saturday night protest was reportedly organized on Facebook by a Baja California student group,
Protests have gripped Mexico since President Enrique Peña Nieto moved to deregulate the country’s oil and gas industry, causing gasoline prices to increase as much as 20 percent. Many stations have closed, leading some people in Tijuana to drive to San Diego to purchase gas.
Closures of the giant San Ysidro port, the busiest land crossing in the world, are rare.
