An early morning, two-alarm fire at a middle school in Encinitas destroyed the administration building Saturday, but caused no damage to classrooms, according to authorities.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s bomb/arson squad was sent to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the damage.

A security guard on duty at Oak Crest Middle School in the 600 block of Balour Drive noticed the fire at about 3:40 a.m. and called it in to the Encinitas Fire Department, according to Fire Marshal Anita Pupping.

When firefighters arrived at the school, they saw flames coming from the doors and windows of the building and immediately called for a second alarm response, sending in reinforcements from the Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach and Carlsbad fire departments, Pupping said.

School will be open on Monday since no damage was done to classrooms, Pupping said.
