A 47-year-old cruise ship crew member who was experiencing heart attack symptoms was evacuated from his ship early Saturday morning off San Diego, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.

The crew of the ship Ruby Princess was about nine miles southwest of Pt. Loma when it contacted the Coast Guard in San Diego at about 11:30 p.m. Friday. The Coast Guard duty flight surgeon recommended that the patient be medically evacuated and taken to a hospital for emergency care.

A Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched at about 1 a.m., arrived on scene, then hoisted the man into the helicopter at 2:05 a.m., according to USCG public affairs.

The Jayhawk crew returned to San Diego at about 2:45 a.m., where the patient was transferred to an ambulance and taken to the UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest. The man’s condition was not released.
