A man was pronounced dead Sunday after being pulled out of the water off Sunset Cliffs, said an official from San Diego Fire-Rescue.

Apparently, the man was trying to climb back onto the cliffs when the waves knocked him back, rendering him unconscious, spokesman Lee Swanson said.

According to the San Diego Lifeguard office, the man was 61 years old.

The incident was first reported about 1 p.m. at Luscomb’s Point, a popular scenic location. Lifeguards on a watercraft found the man floating offshore and pulled him out. Despite using CPR, they could not revive him, Swanson said.

San Diego police found a car they believe belongs to the victim and are investigating to see if they can confirm his identity.
