A motorcyclist was killed Saturday afternoon in a collision near Scissors Crossing in the East County.
The motorcycle and a Toyota Prius crashed in the westbound lanes on Route 78 near the Great Southern Overland Stage Route of 1849 shortly before 3 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol and CalFire.
The rider died at the scene, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Nick Schuler said. The Toyota’s driver was not hurt.
State Route 78 was closed in both direction between San Felipe Road and the Yaqui Pass, the CHP said. No nearby detour between Julian and the Imperial Valley or Borrego Springs was available, other than Interstate 8 via Seeley or county route S-22 through Ranchita.
